Major Car Service in Pakenham

The major service is where the expensive failures get caught: the belt that's overdue, the gearbox fluid that's past its best, the brake fluid that's absorbed moisture. We do all of it in-house, on cars we've quoted honestly before we lift a spanner. Call us with your make, model and odometer reading and we'll tell you what's due and lock in a number before any work begins.

What's usually done on a major service

Everything in a {minor service}, plus items from your manufacturer's schedule such as:

  • Spark plugs (turbo, direct-injection engines are particularly hard on plugs)
  • Brake fluid replacement. Most European manufacturers specify this every two years.
  • Coolant replacement where it's due
  • Air filter, fuel filter and cabin filter replacement
  • Transmission fluid and filter service where the schedule calls for it
  • Differential, transfer case and Haldex/AWD fluids on all-wheel-drive and 4x4 vehicles
  • Drive belt and tensioner inspection
  • Timing belt or chain assessment. Some engines use oil-bathed "wet" belts that degrade internally, and we check for the warning signs.
  • Full suspension and steering inspection
  • Full-system diagnostic scan with a printed or emailed summary of any stored codes
  • Intake and carbon build-up check on direct-injection petrol engines where relevant

What a major service looks like on different cars

Vehicle typeTypical focus areas
Turbo petrol or diesel EuropeanSpark plugs, oil approval, brake fluid, coolant, timing belt or chain assessment, DPF-related checks (diesel)
Dual-clutch and automatic transmissionsTransmission fluid and filter service per schedule (commonly around 60,000 km on wet-clutch dual-clutch units, but check your model)
All-wheel-drive and 4x4Diff, transfer case and AWD coupling fluids, driveline and CV joint inspection, suspension wear
HybridBrake system condition, coolant loops, inverter and power electronics checks, fault scan across hybrid system modules
EVBrake fluid, battery and drive-unit coolant, brake caliper service, cabin filter, tyre and suspension wear, full fault scan

Intervals vary by manufacturer and model. We work from your schedule and confirm what's due before any work starts.

Minor or major? How to tell

  • Look in your logbook. It shows which services are minor and which are major, usually by kilometres or years.
  • Not sure? Send us your make, model, year and odometer reading and we'll tell you what's due.
  • Missed a service? We'll bring it back on track and prioritise the things that matter most.

Why bring your major service to us

Most of our work is diagnosing hard-to-find and intermittent faults on modern European, hybrid and EV vehicles. That's relevant to a major service because the stored fault history, the way a car idles and shifts, and small oddities that the owner has stopped noticing are all clues. We look at the whole car, not just the schedule.

FAQs

How do I know if my car needs a major service?

Your logbook shows which services are major, usually by kilometres or years. If you're not sure, send us your make, model, year and odometer reading and we'll tell you what's due.

Why is a major service more expensive than a minor one?

There's more in it: spark plugs, brake fluid, other fluids, filters and sometimes belts, and more labour to do it. Skipping it usually costs more in the end. A timing belt that fails can wreck an engine.

I missed my last service. Is it too late?

No. We'll check what's overdue, tell you what matters most, and bring the car back onto schedule.

Will a major service fix my warning light?

Not by itself. We scan the whole car for stored faults as part of the service, and if there's one, we'll tell you what we found and quote the diagnosis before doing anything. Intermittent and hard-to-find faults are what we enjoy most.

Do you service dual-clutch gearboxes and all-wheel-drive systems?

Yes, where the schedule calls for it, including gearbox, differential, transfer case and AWD coupling fluids. Tell us your model and we'll confirm before you book.

Can I get a second opinion on a dealer's major service quote?

Yes, and it's free. See the section above.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the car and what's due. Call us with your make, model and odometer reading and we'll lock in a number before any work begins.

Free second opinion on any quote

Handed a major service quote with a long list of extras? Bring us the quote and tell us what they said was wrong. We'll tell you what's actually wrong, what's genuinely urgent, and what's been added in. No charge for the conversation, no pressure to book the work with us, and no upsells.

Text or email a photo of the quote to [PHONE / EMAIL], or bring it in. If we need to see the car to give you a straight answer, we'll say so. [Confirm whether that inspection is free.]
